This may not seem like that big of a deal. Records are broken all of the time, right? Well, this time the CRA Racing track record was broken by Carson Hocevar at only 13 years old. For 2016, Hocevar and his team wanted to race stock cars and place in the top 10 which happened right away, then it was the top 5 which they did, and finally they wanted to win which they were able to do at Berlin Raceway. Breaking the CRA track record was just the icing on the cake and Hocevar could not have been happier.
Carson Hocevar of Portage, Mich. outraced his competition and earned his first feature win at a Super Late Model car event at Berlin Raceway. Hocevar started sixth in the 25 car field, took the lead at lap 17, and led the field the rest of the race. A caution fell on lap 44 out of 60 but he kept his composure. Hocevar’s competitors thought that this was their chance to get in front of him – they were wrong. Seemingly with ease, Hocevar drove away on the restart. He beat VanHaitsma, a 35 year old racing veteran by nearly .8 seconds.
Ray Dunlap recently sat down with Johnny Benson to discuss his life after NASCAR. After a brief discussion of watersports and Frisbee golfing, Benson talked about his most recent work with Carson Hocevar. Refusing to take it easy on the 12-year-old driver, Benson insisted on treating him like any other driver in training. “I’m not going to teach him to be cautious,“ he said, “but I’m not going to teach him to be aggressive.”
Carson Hocevar was racing Quarter Midgets when he was just six years old. After winning 15 United States Auto Club championships, he’s now taking the first steps in the next leg of his journey: stock car racing. With his impressive history, reputation for possessing raw talent and the help of a collection of local supporters, Hocevar’s ultimate dream is to compete in NASCAR.
